SUMMARY:Assessing 80 Years of Diplomatic Efforts for Nuclear Disarmament: Marking the Legacy of UN General Assembly Resolution 1\, 1946
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n\n\nJanuary 2026 marks the 80th anniversary of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1(1)\, the first resolution to be adopted\, which established a UN Commission tasked to “make specific proposals for the elimination from national armaments of atomic weapons.” The resolution placed the newly created United Nations\, international diplomacy\, and international law at the heart of the debate over how to address the challenge of nuclear weapons posed to humanity. This webinar will reflect on eight decades of multilateral efforts to advance nuclear disarmament. These include the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)\, which entered into force in 1970 and contains unmet obligations to end the arms race at an early date and achieve nuclear disarmament\, and which 191 states have joined. There is also the much newer Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)\, which entered into force five years ago\, in January 2021\, and has already been accepted by 99 states. The discussion will cover current and imminent challenges for multilateral nuclear diplomacy\, the crisis of nuclear arms control\, and prospects for the upcoming spring 2026 NPT Review Conference\, which follows back-to-back Review Conferences in 2012 and 2015 that failed to reach agreement\, as well as expectations for the first TPNW Review Conference\, to be held in late 2026. \nSpeakers:\n– Izumi Nakamitsu is United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs.\n– Patricia Lewis\, a physicist\, is past director of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and co-chair of the TPNW Scientific Advisory Group (TBC).\n– Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova is Director of the Nonproliferation Program at the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation and Japan Chair for a World without Nuclear Weapons.\n– Zia Mian (moderator) is Co-Director of the Princeton University Program on Science and Global Security and a co-founder of the Physicists Coalition.

SUMMARY:The Skyrocketing Costs of U.S. Nuclear Weapons and its Implications
DESCRIPTION: \n  \n \nThe Physicists Coalition for Nuclear Threat Reduction hosted the webinar “The FY27 U.S. Nuclear Weapons Budget: NNSA and DoD Priorities.” Eliana Johns of the Federation of American Scientists and Xiaodon Liang of the Arms Control Association provided a briefing on the $1.45 trillion FY27 defense budget request and examined its implications for U.S. nuclear weapons programs and strategy. \nThe panelists discussed the $27 billion NNSA Weapons Activities request and the $71 billion in total nuclear weapons spending requested by the Department of Defense\, including funding for key nuclear modernization programs. The webinar reviewed funding priorities across major nuclear weapon systems and modernization programs\, highlighted emerging trends in U.S. nuclear spending\, and considered what the proposed investments could mean for the future of the U.S. nuclear arsenal and U.S. nuclear strategy. \nSpeakers: \n_ Xiaodon Liang is Senior Policy Analyst for Nuclear Weapons Policy and Disarmament at the Arms Control Association. He focuses on U.S. nuclear weapons policy and the nuclear weapons budget\, arms control and disarmament policy\, and U.S. strategic relations with Russia and China. \n_ Eliana Johns is a research advisor with the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists\, and a contributor to the Nuclear Notebooks produced for the Bulletin of Atomic scientists since 2022. Her research uses open-source methods to examine nuclear forces and nuclear weapons policy\, as well as the intersection of emerging technology and security\, with a particular focus on East Asia. \n_ Curtis Asplund (moderator) is an assistant professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at San José State University\, California\, and a member of the Physicists Coalition’s Steering Committee.

SUMMARY:Nuclear Weapons and the Responsibility of Scientists: A Conversation with Carlo Rovelli
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Acclaimed theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli will discuss his new book\, “85 Seconds to Midnight: A Physicist’s Argument Against Rearmament”\, a reflection on the role of physicists and their collective bad conscience in creating the “poisoned gift” of nuclear weapons. Rovelli makes references to the work of Enrico Fermi\, Niels Bohr\, Werner Heisenberg and other scientists who helped create what he calls “the worst weapon of mass destruction\,” examining how the atomic bomb came to be\, what we know about nuclear risks posed by powers great and small\, and the renewed arms race underway today. Because different futures remain possible\, Rovelli argues that physicists must reckon with their responsibility and work to halt the current race toward war. Rovelli will be in conversation with Coalition co-founder Zia Mian of Princeton University’s Program on Science and Global Security.
